"The last word in radiosurgery, combining advanced treatment technologies with unprecedented system characteristics", Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ represents the beginning of the future of stereotactic radiosurgery. This innovative system radically expands treatment methods and scope. Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion provides faster and more flexible surgical procedures, enabling high patient throughput with less staff workload. The Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ system features unprecedented characteristics:

  • 100% continuous operation
  • One-button control
  • Saving more than 2 hours per treatment session (compared to previous systems)
  • The planning process is twice as fast.

Data based on treatments performed at Hospital La Timone, Marseille, France (July–December 2006) and Cromwell Hospital, London, UK.

Gamma Knife radiosurgery is preferred for significant reasons. Gamma Knife intervention is performed in just one procedure and does not require general anesthesia. After a Gamma Knife procedure, patients are typically discharged home the same day or the next day. This saves significant hospitalization costs (compared to open surgical interventions). During the radiosurgical procedure, 196 cobalt-60 gamma ray beams converge with high precision at a given focus on the target. Each individual beam has low intensity and does not affect healthy brain tissue on its way to the target. The beams converge only at the isocenter, where the total radiation dose becomes extremely high. The dose delivered during irradiation is formed using collimators of various sizes and by opening individual sectors. The high precision of the Leksell Gamma Knife system, with an accuracy of less than 0.5 mm, makes it possible to direct a high radiation dose to the damaged area with minimal risk of damage to healthy tissues. "The Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ system is a significant step in dosimetry, ease of use, and convenience for both patients and medical staff. Installing the new Gamma Knife system in our center allows highly conformal irradiation in a short time, thanks to full process automation. This system significantly increases patient throughput and expands application areas." Christer Lindquist, MD, Director of the Gamma Knife Centre at Cromwell Hospital, London, UK. Member of the expert panel during the development process of Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion.
