Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon™

Radiosurgical Precision
As a leader in brain radiosurgery, Elekta has introduced a new concept in radiosurgery for treating virtually all brain formations with the new Leksell Gamma Knife Icon system. Gamma Knife Icon is the most accurate radiosurgical device on the market and the only system with microradiosurgery technology.
At the same time, the Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon™ system further reduces radiation dose to healthy tissues. The Icon™ system also provides a number of innovations in the Gamma Knife product line, such as integrated imaging, software for continuous dose delivery control, and the ability to perform treatment without invasive fixation methods, while maintaining the same high level of radiosurgical precision. Given the growing demand for radiosurgical treatment, Icon makes the Gamma Knife system more flexible and easier to use, allowing more departments to establish brain radiosurgery in oncology clinics.
DoseControl™ In-Treatment Adaptation System
The DoseControl™ in-treatment dose control system is the most comprehensive approach to treatment quality control, providing real control of dose delivery accuracy. Integration of dosimetric control during treatment ensures continuous quality control throughout the entire irradiation session and allows clinical decisions to be made in real time.
Real-Time Position Tracking
In the new Gamma Knife Icon system, an identical level of dose delivery accuracy is achieved with any fixation method - both when using a frame and with frameless fixation, with an accuracy of 0.15 mm, which is 6 times higher than the standard of existing systems. If the patient's position goes beyond the acceptable accuracy, the system locks, instantly stopping dose delivery.
Online Dose Delivery Control
The unique integrated stereotactic Cone Beam CT imaging system is a new addition to the Icon radiosurgical system. Integrated with the patient positioning system, the CBCT system determines stereotactic coordinates in 3D, taking into account the patient's anatomy. After matching the Cone Beam CT image with the previously obtained MRI image, the treatment plan is automatically adapted. Thanks to the unique dose delivery characteristics, the system automatically adapts to changes in patient position. Online dose assessment allows comparing the dose distribution that should be delivered versus the dose you planned to deliver during the treatment session, which is done right at the console, and if necessary, the plan can be easily and quickly adapted online.
System Adaptation of Your Choice
Frame or frameless fixation, image-guided treatment or marker-based workflow, single-session or fractionated treatment, standard radiosurgery or high-precision microradiosurgery – the choice is yours.
The Leksell Gamma Knife system provides high treatment accuracy regardless of the fixation method, ensuring equally high precision for both frameless and frame-based treatment. This distinguishes the Icon system from all other systems on the market.
Unprecedented Precision — For Every Case
All components of the Gamma Knife system are integrated into a single system providing high precision of the radiosurgical system, which today represents the highest threshold of radiosurgical treatment accuracy, and according to documented data is 0.15 mm in real clinical conditions. In addition, none of the radiosurgical systems known today can compare with the Gamma Knife system in terms of preserving healthy tissues from radiation exposure. The unique design with isocentric planning and treatment allows you to make sure that the dose is exactly where you need it and has no effect on other areas of the brain. When treating with the Icon system, the dose to normal brain tissue is typically 2-4 times lower than when using other technologies. The extracranial dose is in an even lower range compared to other systems, which is 10-130 times lower than when using other systems.
Regardless of the immobilization method, the Leksell Gamma Knife Icon system provides the highest accuracy and steep dose gradient fall-off outside the irradiation area. Thus, the Leksell Gamma Knife Icon system provides high accuracy regardless of the chosen immobilization method.
Catalyst
EVOLUTION IN 4D TREATMENT
Thanks to the latest advances in planning systems and treatment dose delivery, continuous optimization of results has become possible. Now, with the revolutionary Catalyst system, you can achieve the same level of confidence by controlling a single variable — patient position.
The Catalyst system is a revolutionary solution for surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT), combined with software optimized for workflow integration.
The Catalyst system offers a complete solution for 3D conformal radiotherapy and IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) techniques for real-time patient position monitoring before and during irradiation, ensuring the best therapeutic and palliative treatment outcomes while preventing unwanted radiation doses.
Innovative Real-Time 4D SGRT Solution
- Real-time SGRT for the entire 4D radiation treatment workflow, from position correction and positioning to monitoring intra-fractional shifts and treatment with respiratory gating.
- Patented color map projected onto the patient's body during setup for immediate patient positioning correction.
- Treatment with respiratory gating.
- Support for all modes: breath-hold, deep inspiration, and controlled/free breathing.
- Audio-visual guidance is available to help the patient maintain optimal breathing cycles. The patient's baseline is calculated as an absolute parameter that can be used during treatment.
High Level of Patient Safety and Comfort
- Motion management without additional radiation doses.
- No markers on or around the patient's body.
- Audio-visual guidance is available to help the patient maintain optimal breathing cycles.
Increased Productivity Without Compromising Treatment Quality
- Potential to improve the quality and speed of the positioning process, e.g., extremity sarcoma.
- Non-rigid algorithm improves accuracy and clinical application speed without additional time for ROI development.
- Highly integrated quality assurance and quality control procedure — daily quality control in 5 minutes.
- Potential to reduce the frequency of other IGRT technologies.
Sentinel 4DCT
A New Benchmark in 4D-CT
CT simulation is becoming increasingly routine in radiation therapy. But patient breathing, as well as tumor or healthy tissue movement, can affect planning, dose delivery, and verification. During regular CT scanning, mobility can cause inaccuracy in target definition, resulting in a moving target appearing distorted in shape and incorrect in location. Irradiating a larger area to cover the tumor may result in healthy tissues receiving unwanted doses.
To improve visualization of moving tumors, 4D-CT is used, which allows determining motion and developing an accurate plan for precision or gated radiotherapy.
C-RAD Sentinel 4DCT is an easy-to-use laser-optical surface scanning system with functionality for 4D-CT reconstruction and gated imaging in the CT room. Additionally, the system allows obtaining reference images for patient positioning and tracking intrafractional shifts during radiation therapy in the treatment room.
Full 4D-CT Support
- Along with retrospective and prospective gating modes, all breath hold, deep inspiration, and controlled/free breathing modes are supported. This provides maximum flexibility to adapt to different patient capabilities and clinical requirements.
- The patient baseline is calculated as an absolute parameter that can be used during treatment.
- Throughout the entire radiation therapy process, the system provides seamless support for 4D-CT simulation, 4D treatment planning, and 4D dose delivery according to treatment phases.
High Level of Patient Safety and User Confidence in Reliable Operation
- No need to mark the patient or place other equipment around them.
- Automatic couch movement in the CT room using the laser tracking system.
- Tracking of thoracic and abdominal respiratory movements in parallel with virtual monitoring.
- Optimal patient breathing pattern is ensured by available audio-visual guidance using built-in headphones and video glasses.
